Congratulations on Karissa for the Brown-Rudder Award! Well deserved and we are so proud of you!

Karissa Yamaguchi, graduating senior from our lab, was named one of two winners of the Brown-Rudder Award for 2019. The Brown Foundation-Earl Rudder Memorial Outstanding Student Award was established in 1970 as the highest honor bestowed upon a graduating senior at Texas A&M University. The award honors the outstanding senior student who exemplifies the leadership, patriotism, fortitude, courage, humility, love of Texas A&M University, and willingness to uphold the principles for which Texas A&M stands as vividly exemplified by James Earl Rudder during his lifetime. Thank you for your excellent work in our lab; Congratulations for your achievements; and Best wishes for your next career, Karissa!

We are studying RNA silencing in the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana and several economically-important crops.

RNA silencing is a key regulatory process that controls various aspects of biology in eukaryotes including growth and development, antiviral defense and chromosome gardening. The common themes under RNA silencing include the biogenesis of small RNAs by DICERs or Dicer-like proteins and the incorporation of the small RNAs into Argonaute (AGO)-centered RNA-induced silencing complexes (RISCs).

The RISCs execute the repressive or regulatory functions on target genes at the transcriptional or post-transcriptional levels.  Our long-term goals are to understand novel functions and mechanisms of RNA silencing in plants.
